In the Beginning Was the Word
The Gospel of John does not begin in a stable or beside a river. It begins before time, in the beginning, and it begins with a Person. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.John 1:1, KJV
Everything you can see, the still water, the tall grass, the light at the edge of the day, was made through Him. Nothing that exists stands outside His hands. That is the first good thing to know today: you were not an accident, and neither was the morning.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.John 1:4,5, KJV
Darkness is real, and John never pretends otherwise. But notice the order of the sentence: the light shines in it, and the darkness cannot overcome it. A single lamp changes a whole room. Whatever feels heavy today, the light has already entered it.
Then comes the offer, and it costs nothing to receive. John does not say that we climb to God. He says that God came down to us, and that those who receive Him are given a new place in His family.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.John 1:12, KJV
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.John 1:14, KJV
Grace and truth, together, freely given. That is the best deal there has ever been. Take a quiet minute today, receive it again, and let the day begin from there.
